CD Projekt Red’s next fantasy adventure

The Witcher 4 is a premium adventure game from CD Projekt Red. As the fourth entry in the popular fantasy RPG series, The Witcher, this much-anticipated game puts you in control of the titular witcher—superhuman warriors often tasked with hunting monsters. It combines a wide range of fighting options, from melee weapons to ranged magic spells, which you can upgrade as you progress across a massive open world.

Unlike its predecessors, from The Witcher: Enhanced Edition to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the biggest difference in The Witcher 4 is that it no longer has Geralt as the main character.

A new saga in the Witcher franchise

The first three games in The Witcher franchise revolved around Geralt of Rivia, The Witcher 4 is expected to kickstart a new multi-game series in the fantasy RPG franchise. Known as The Witcher Polaris, this fourth entry is set to be a next-generation game. The game is built using Unreal Engine 5 instead of CD Projekt Red’s proprietary RED engine, which was used for Cyberpunk 2077 and previous Witcher games.

If it’s anything like the previous games in the series, it will also revolve around superhuman mercenaries called Witchers. Players roam around a fantasy world, completing missions that mostly focus on hunting mythical creatures. Aside from the main story progression, there are also a lot of side quests, contracts, and treasure-hunting missions. Remember that certain in-game decisions can have long-term impacts on the world.

Still, a lot of game-specific details are still kept under wraps. This includes customization options as well as the game’s main storyline. Even the game’s official title and release date are still up for discussion. Either way, The Witcher and all its spinoffs have become an integral part of the modern fantasy RPG genre, and the fourth mainline entry will have a crucial role in its legacy in the future.

The future of the fantasy RPG series

While Geralt of Rivia’s adventures wrapped up nicely by The Witcher 3, the still-mysterious The Witcher 4 holds a lot of promise both for long-time fans of the franchise as well as for new, potential players. By promising a fresh start with its new protagonist, built on the already-established fantasy world, it already deserves the attention it’s getting as the start of the next saga.
